Tooth Whitening

Looking for a way to brighten up your smile? As we age, our teeth naturally darken. One of the most popular ways to enhance the colour of your smile and improve its cosmetic appearance is teeth whitening. With teeth whitening, we can bleach the enamel to remove discolorations and stains from teeth. If it is done under the supervision of a trained dental professional it is a very safe and successful procedure.

Adult teeth contain a mix of yellow, red and grey colours — there is no one correct colour. Healthy teeth darken and yellow with age. The dazzling teeth of models and TV personalities often are the result of digital manipulation or porcelain veneers. Very seldom are they due to just natural enamel.

Discolouration stems from surface stains — tars in tobacco, tannins in tea and coffee or coloured food — or "internal" stains in the tooth structure. Toothpastes marketed for whitening contain ingredients to remove external stains by a gentle abrasive action. Internal stains are treated with oxygen-releasing chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide. When bleaching is supervised by dentists, it is regarded as a safe and simple procedure.

As in most situations, whitening is not suitable for everyone. Some people will find they get no change with conventional bleach; others, due to sensitivity or on-going dental issues, will experience further problems if they use tooth whitening.

Tooth whitening is a very simple process. It relies on either Hydrogen Peroxide or Carbamide Peroxide to whiten teeth. The concentrations needed for reliable whitening can only be obtained under the supervision of a dental professional.

There are three ways of bleaching teeth;

Over the counter toothpastes and bleaching strips and trays – can be useful for some external stains but are usually not effective against the majority of stained and discoloured teeth. The concentration of Hydrogen Peroxide available over the counter is not enough to give a decent result.

Take home bleaching using custom made trays is the most effective way to bleach teeth. The use of a very high concentration of bleach inside a custom fitted tray for an hour a day will result in a significant bleaching effect within a week.

The third way of bleaching is in-chair whitening, Advanced Zoom! whitening is the number 1 method of whitening in the world and will ensure the best results. Be sure to ask our friendly staff members all about this system.
