Thumb Sucking
Thumb sucking and your child's teeth:
- Thumb sucking is normal for infants, and most kids will stop by themselves.
- Bite problems and crooked teeth may become issues as a result of prolonged thumb sucking.
- If the habit continues beyond the age of 4 -5, it may be necessary to be examined by an orthodontist.
How to stop the habit?
Your child will only stop sucking their thumb if they want to. However, ways to encourage this are:
- Rewards chart
- Glove
- Reminders
- Band-Aid around the thumb
If your child is still a baby, giving them a dummy to use instead can be a better idea, as it is far easier to discard the dummy in the future.
