Dummies - when to and how to wean your child

Problems with dummy use include:

  • Dental abnormalities
  • Failure of breastfeeding
  • Recurrent ear problems

It is ideal to begin weaning the dummy from a young age, as it is generally much easier to do so with a one year old than a 4 year old.

Some ideas on how to do this include:

  • “Cold Turkey”
  • Reward Charts
  • Gradual approach:  only allowing a dummy to go to sleep, then taking out of mouth when fallen asleep, then no dummy during day, then during sleep etc.

Be careful not to make using the dummy a force of habit!
