Dummies - when to and how to wean your child
Problems with dummy use include:
- Dental abnormalities
- Failure of breastfeeding
- Recurrent ear problems
It is ideal to begin weaning the dummy from a young age, as it is generally much easier to do so with a one year old than a 4 year old.
Some ideas on how to do this include:
- “Cold Turkey”
- Reward Charts
- Gradual approach: only allowing a dummy to go to sleep, then taking out of mouth when fallen asleep, then no dummy during day, then during sleep etc.
Be careful not to make using the dummy a force of habit!
